Globalstar ramps up marketing for new product launches
By Erik McNeal
Globalstar, a provider of satellite voice and data services for commercial and recreational users, will increase marketing spend to launch individual consumer focused campaign initiatives for the SPOT Global Phone and SPOT Gen3 GPS tracker.
“We intend to increase the marketing spend to bring those products to the marketplace and push them through the retail channels that we’ve described, but to do so in a responsible way consistent with growing our EBITDA as well,” said CEO James Monroe III, CEO in the company’s second quarter earnings August 13.
The SPOT Gen3, a smaller outdoor beacon that offers enhanced tracking features and twice the battery life of the previous SPOT device, launched at the end of the previous quarter, Monroe said.
The Global Phone, priced at $499, launched in May.
Skyya Communications has been the company’s AOR since 2009.
Monroe explained that Globalstar will continue to reassert itself in the marketplace in the second half of the year. Product innovation still remains a key focus.
“On the enterprise customer front, we are penetrating deeper into priority industry sectors like marine and oil and gas, educating existing users and new prospects of our Globalstar's superior performance,” he continued. “We plan to release the universal maritime kit, a feature-rich duplex device designed specifically as a cost effective solution for the marine market.”
The consumer side of the business will launch a compact device that allows customers to trace the path of any moving asset virtually anywhere in the world. It’s powered by Globalstar’s
Simplex and SPOT technologies.
“The new SPOT and Simplex products are expected to drive further upside into 2014 and beyond,” Monroe said.
Total revenue was $19.8 million in the second quarter compared to $20 million in the second quarter of 2012. Subscriber equipment sales decreased from the same quarter last year to $4.4 million.
The down sales are attributed to “several large sales that did not recur in 2013,” Monroe said. One of the larger sales that did not renew was the deal with the United States Forest Service for 6,000 SPOT units.
“We expect equipment sales to rebound with the launch of SPOT Gen 3 and other products over the coming months,” Monroe said.
