Subject: Magazine, TV, outdoor, digital, social media, sponsorship

Company: British Airways, one of the UK's largest airlines It's owned by International Airlines Group (IAG).

Opportunity: Hired Publicis’s Carat is still on media planning and buying, but we’ll let you know if we hear differently.  With new creative on the way, look to secure buys in Q4 and Q1/Q2, when airlines tend to skew most of their ad dollars. Note that BA’s digital tends to be direct response heavy. Also, the review was part of BA’s efforts to drive better marketing coordination and effectiveness, meaning ROI should be at the heart of your approach.

Additional Insight

Digital Incumbent: Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH), which has been on creative for about 10 years.

Media Spend: British Airways spends about $10 million annually on US advertising, skewing towards magazine, spot TV and search, according to Kantar Media.

Since January, BA is utilziing a wider range of online publishers compared to its display activity last year. Whereas last year the airline ran display largely on news, media and local sites, over the same time period this year, activity has skewed more towards news, shopping, local paper, sports, entertainment and weather. For example, this year’s top three publishers are ebay.com, shockwave.com and history.com and last year’s were bbc.com, bbc.co.uk and dailymail.co.uk.

This year, about 66% of display was purchased direct instead of via ad networks or exchanges compared to only 38% in 2014.

US Growth: Willie Walsh, CEO of the International Airlines Group, told launching its own trans-Atlantic joint venture with the carrier.

Decision Maker Shifts: Earlier this year, BA overhauled its marketing team. All marcom activity now falls under under Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Crawley, who joined the airline in 1992. Additionally, Sara Dunham, head of retail and direct, will take on additional responsibilities as head of marketing, retail and direct. Dunham succeeds former marketing head Abigail Comber, who has been elevated to the newly created role of head of customer. BA is in the process of finding former Brand Chief Frank van der Post's replacement.
