Score 68 – On the Brink: Struggling Taos Ski Valley hires CMO following acquisition
DailyVista is pleased to bring you our here.
Subject: Sponsorship, PR, traditional advertising, digital
Company: sold to billionaire Louis Bacon last year
Opportunity: Hired Jesse Keaveny as CMO to design and execute the resort’s strategic vision and growth, including the opening of the it’s being run by an owner with deep pockets focused on making improvements to reverse declines. Agencies with resort, casino and outdoor experience should have the advantage here.
Experience: Most recently, Keaveny was regional VP of marketing for Caesars Entertainment’s Mid-South region. He’s also held marketing roles at Harrah’s Entertainment and FedEx. Keaveny succeeds Marketing Director Adriana Blake, founder Ernie Blake’s granddaughter.
Struggles: According to The Taos News, over the last 20 years, annual visitation at TSV has trended downward, from a 10-year average of 295,000 in the '90s, to a 10-year average of 224,000 between 2000 and 2010. TSV’s declines come as skier numbers nationwide have increased over the same period. Not allowing snowboarding until 2008 certainly hurt visitation, but TSV has been slow to make capital improvements and expand, as well.
Competition: With about 250,000 skiers annually, Taos Ski Valley is a small-medium ski resort that competes with resorts of similar size, such as Colorado’s Sipapu Resort to choose over TSV, as well.
