Company: La Quinta, headquartered in Irving, Texas, owns, operates or franchises more than 600 hotels under the La Quinta Inns and La Quinta Inn & Suites brands in 40 US states and Canada.

Opportunity: La Quinta has added two members to its marketing team: Vicki Cutwright, VP of consumer insights and analytics;  and David Sims, VP of loyalty marketing. Cutwright and Sims will both be based in Irving, Texas, and will work with members of the marketing, finance, sales, operations and IT teams on various strategic initiatives. Specifically, Cutwright will be responsible for guest insights and analysis and will manage the brand’s market research function. In his role, Sims will oversee the design, development, ongoing management and long-term enhancement of the La Quinta Returns program. His goal will be to improve member acquisition, activation and customer retention.  Like many other markets, the lodging sector was hit hard when the economy crashed because people significantly scaled back travel expenditures. Now that the economy is recovering, look for broadcast, digital, sponsorship and social media opportunities to strengthen the brand and attract new and returning visitors.

Experience: Cutwright joins La Quinta from CROS Partners, where she led brand strategy, research and analytics. Sims was most recently VP of CRM at GNC. 

Del Sol Hotel: Last year, La Quinta announced its new Del Sol hotek prototype, which is “fresh and stylish.” The first Del Sol is scheduled to open during March 2015 and there are currently 45 more Del Sol franchise hotels either under construction or in the planning phase. 

Competitors:  Best Western, Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn & Suites, Fairfield Inn and Comfort Inn & Suites to name a few.

Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, La Quinta spent $34.6 million on measured media through Q3 2014. Most of this was allocated to digital ($18.8 million) and broadcast ads ($12.2 million).  $1.9 million was spent on radio and $1.4 million to out-of-home. Note that La Quinta’s most active buying period is typically Q1 and Q2.

iSpot.tv reports that La Quinta spent $18.1 million on national TV ads in 2014. The highest spend was allocated to ESPN, NBC, NBC Sports, MSNBC, ESPN2 and CNN during programming such as NHL Hockey, XXII Winter Olympics, “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” NFL Football and “Mike & Mike.” These buys seems to indicate that La Quinta’s target market is men, ages 25-50.

According to Moat, only 6% of La Quinta’s standard display ads were bought directly from the publisher last year. Top ad destinations included go.com, usairways.com, legacy.com and usanetwork.com.
