Told Ya!, Campaign Imminent: Former #25 John Hancock appoints new creative, media agencies


Update (7/17): Canadian financial services company reportedly on media planning, buying and analytics. 

Heat's first work is slated to launch in early 2018, so sellers should should start going after upcoming "We're not Herbie Hancock" creative (I assume the new campaign will be "Tommy Boy" themed) revenue now. Historically, John Hancock's top advertising periods are Q2 and Q4, but it looks like the new campaign could break as early as Q1. 

Male Gen-X and Boomer-focused sellers should continue to have an advantage securing revenue, but keep in mind that Herbie...I mean John Hancock wants to age down the brand to better reach 30-somethings with money to spend on life insurance and investments.   

Incumbent:  IPG Hill Holliday (HH), Boston had the account since 1985.

Financial giant mixing up John Hancock and Herbie Hancock for several years. 

Media agencies - keep pitching too, since HH also handled planning and buying. Media reviews often follow creative, and vice versa, so that work could be on the table, as well. 

Sellers - John Hancock's top advertising periods are Q2 and Q4, according to Kantar Media. Keep going after HH for last minute Q2 buys, and, for now, Q4. But, keep in mind that there may be enough time for a new agency to take over the account and create a new campaign for Q4. It depends on how far along the creative review is already. We'll keep you posted as we learn more.

TV Brekdown: $10 million has gone to national TV ads the past year, (see show targeting right) down from $14.6 million in 2015, iSpot.tv reports. 

Digital Breakdown: Hancock's display levels are still reletively low, but spending did double the past 12 months to $1.8 million for 202.8 million impressions, per Pathmatics. About 77% of spending was on desktop ads, most of which were bought site direct.

Top targeted sites, all of which ran desktop and mobile ads, include forbes.com, aarp.com, boston.cbslocal.com, cbslocal.com, espn.com, morningstar.com, bloomberg.com and Time's health.com and cookinglight.com.
