Millennial Parent Opps: Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo reorganizes leadership structure

The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo (HLSR) has restructured its leadership team under seven C-suite positions. Seven C-level executives will report directly to president and CEO Joel Cowley. Of these seven, one will lead "all aspects of customer experience," which includes marketing and PR: David Brady, chief entertainment and customer experience officer (CE&CEO?). Brady brings CMO knowledge from Brady Strategic Partnerships as president and chief strategic officer, and he has CMO experience under his belt from at least two other companies.

Brady will also oversee retail functions, including ticketing, merchandise and the Rodeo Uncorked! Wine Show events, which includes a competition between national wineries. I, a lentil-eating millennial, might even show up for that. While keeping Gen X in mind, this type of experiential marketing skews toward millennials and keeps the rodeo modern.

Since this is a Southwestern regional event, spending tends to be lower than national companies. Lucky for you, sellers, HLSR increased its digital display spend this year by 811%, from $2.6k (Oct 2017 - 2018) to $23.7k (Oct 2018 - 2019). Most ads in the 2019 spending period were placed site direct (88%) onto thenew93q.com ($16.1k) and khou.com ($4.7k). The ads were videos featuring Bud Light and adorable films of baby livestock and Gen Z children riding ponies. While Gen Z is among the target demographic, remember that your main target should be parents, including Gen X and millennials.

According to Kantar, spending increased across channels in Q1 2019, including TV, digital, OOH and print. TV ads have not run nationally since 2015, per iSpot, so only local TV space sellers should contact HLSR.

Sellers -- HLSR typically only places dollars in DD in Q1, so make plans to reach out soon for Q1 2020 spending dollars. Use local TV space, OOH and print to attract parents to this event, as well as digital display. This company also reaches a higher-percentage Spanish-speaking audience.

Agency readers -- To the best of our knowledge, only Richards Carlberg is partnered with this company as media AOR. If you're looking for some side work from a non-for-profit, consider giving HLSR a call and offering digital services to continue pulling in a younger demographic. If you have any creative or social media advice, feel free to hit them up, as well.
