Family Media Opps: Montana Tourism launches new campaign, going after affluent parents


In fact, Montana found that family travelers are a "large and lucrative segment" where 32% reported having kids under the age of 18. Another key travel segment is "history buffs," another "large and lucrative" niche segment that represents almost 35% of the overall population in key target markets.

As such, while Montana is known for ads in Outside magazine, advertising will now appear in pubs such as The Wall Street Journal, Runner's World, Family Fun and Real Simple. This isn't a surprise for DV readers, as we told you last year that Montana would go after college educated, affluent 30-to-50-year-olds with the disposable time and income to take 3-5 leisure trips annually (research here).

So, sellers with high reach among this demo should keep going after warm season campaign dollars through August, while setting the groundwork for fall and winter. Montana's fall campaign runs Sept-Oct and the winter campaign takes over through March. In all, Montana spends about $15 million on advertising annually.

An edge should go to sellers in the state's key domestic tourism markets (page 5), which includes cities such as Atlanta, Boise, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, Minneapolis-Saint Paul, New York, and San Francisco. 

Agencies - remember that Hoffman York's contract is only for one year, beginning Aug. 15. The contract has the option to renew for seven years, but Montana will, of course, evaluate the relationship and campaign results before agreeing to a long-term deal.  So, shops with deep tourism experience should stay on Montana's radar through next spring.
